Senator John D. Rockefeller, IV receives CoSN's Award for Excellence in Public Service February 27, 2002-Washington, DC-Today, the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) awarded Senator John "Jay" Rockefeller from West Virginia the CoSN Award for Excellence in Public Service during CoSN's 2002 K-12 School Networking Conference in Washington DC. This is CoSN's highest award for elected or appointed national, state, regional or local officials for their achievements in promoting the use of information technologies and the Internet to improve K-12 learning. This is the 3rd year that 3Com has underwritten this critical leadership award. Past honorees include Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and Governor Angus I. King (I-ME). This award was presented in recognition of Senator Rockefeller's outstanding vision in sponsoring the E-rate, as well as his continued leadership on national education technology policy. "Thanks to Senators Rockefeller, our nation is making great progress in bridging the digital divide, and the E-Rate has been a critical source of building materials for this bridge," stated Jim Hirsch, CoSN Board Chair. Most impressively, Senator Rockefeller has worked with the education community to make sure that the E-Rate is administered effectively, first by the establishment of rules by the Federal Communications Commission, then the administration by the Schools & Library Division and finally successfully fighting efforts to roll-back the E-rate by opponents. "3Com is truly honored to be partnering with CoSN in recognizing outstanding public servants who take the lead in finding ways that technology can enhance education. Senator Rockefeller has championed education technology initiatives that improve the lives of all children, never forgetting those in poor and rural areas" stated Bill Swift, Education Marketing Manager at 3Com. The CoSN K-12 School Networking Conference is the leading policy and practice conference in the education technology arena. Held annually in or around Washington, DC, the conference attracts school district, state and national leaders, as well as members of the corporate community, who want the best and most up-to-date information on emerging issues in technology.
