Plenary Session III: Using Assistive Technologies for Empowerment: Leaving No Child Left Behind
During this session, a panel of key educators, clinicians and technologists will address the need for leveraging technologies to improve learning outcomes for all students, especially those students with disabilities. Too often the special education and technology divisions of a school are not working together toward a shared view of empowering each child to learn by using accessible technologies. Panelists will discuss the concept of universal design for learning and the use of accessible media, assistive technology devices and services and digital curricula to transform education and increase educators' flexibility to provide for the needs of a diverse set of learners.

Can technology assist in increasing student achievement? This session will focus on several models where technology is successfully being used to meet student achievement goals, and to assess that achievement. One model uses technology-based learning to individualize standards-based instruction. A second describes the use of a school-based web site/portal that delivers key resources to support learning, and ways to evaluate effectiveness. A third model describes ways of increasing student achievement using web-based applications such as teacher web pages and online student portfolios.
